Abstract:
During extreme marine weather, strong winds tear small droplets from wave crests, forming sea-spray spume. Although individually small, their vast numbers greatly enhance the ocean-atmosphere interface area, influencing momentum, mass, and heat fluxes during tropical cyclones. Quantifying spume production remains highly uncertain due to the challenges of in-situ measurements near the ocean surface. We present a hydrophone-based acoustic approach for measuring droplets under extreme marine conditions. The method uses a hydrophone exposed to air to record the acoustic signals of impacting droplets, from which droplet number concentration is derived. Laboratory tests in a wind tunnel show strong agreement between acoustic and imaging based estimates. This technique offers a low-cost and robust pathway for quantifying droplet fluxes at the ocean surface in typhoon environments.
