From September 12th till October 11th, I am participating in an Expedition into the Arctic. The i2B expedition onboard the icebreaker RV Kronprins Haakon is sailing into the Arctic to the Lomonosov Ridge. The expedition is funded via a European Research Council Synergy Grant “i2B – Into The Blue”. The expedition is aiming to retrieve sediment cores from the Pliocene and Miocene (~5-20 Myr ago). It is likely that during this time interval there have been periods when the Arctic was completely ice-free. Investigating how climate and oceanography were during these times may provide us with important information of what is going to happen in the coming decades.
My role during this expedition is on one hand the biostratigraphy of recovered sediment cores, i.e. using foraminifera to determine the age of the sediments. And additionally, to determine what assemblages did occur, and ultimately to use them to make paleo-reconstructions of watermass conditions.
