Abstract:
Many problems in geophysical fluid dynamics can be posed using convolutions or other integral transforms. When discretized, these turn into N-body sums which are prohibitively expensive to scale to large problem sizes. Drawing on techniques from computational astrophysics and electrostatics, we present a cubed sphere fast multipole method to allow for the fast computation of such problems. We then demonstrate two applications; solving the barotropic vorticity equation, and improving tidal simulations in the ocean model MOM6.
