Abstract:
The air–sea interface is a dynamically critical region where interactions between wind, waves, and currents govern the exchange of momentum and energy between the atmosphere and the ocean. Under light-wind conditions, measurements of wind stress and near-surface flow fields remain scarce, leading to uncertainties in predictive models. We conduct a direct numerical simulation study of coupled air–water flow that resolves gravity-capillary waves and subsurface turbulence in detail. Results reveal wind stress magnitudes consistent with operational parameterizations, an irregular sea state with directional spreading, and enhanced subsurface dissipation driven by microbreaking events. The talk will present these preliminary findings and discuss their implications for understanding momentum transfer and wave growth at the air–sea interface.
