The research work in my (Wei-Jen Chen\u2019s) lab can be summarized as the application of molecular and computational tools within a phylogenetic framework to interpret organismal diversity and to understand mechanisms of evolution (see: http:\/\/wjchen.actinops.googlepages.com\/<\/a>). The research accomplishments in 2012 have been focused on molecular systematics of two cypriniform fish groups (Catostomidae and Labeonini)(Chen & Mayden 2012; Yang et al. 2012), and one perciform fish family, the Mugilidae(Durand, Chen et al. 2012; Durand, Shen et al. 2012). A comprehensive molecular phylogeny of the family Mugilidae(Durand, Shen et al. 2012)demonstrated the polyphyly or paraphyly of aproportion of the traditionally recognized 20 genera in the family. Based on these results, we have proposed a revisedclassification with 25 genera, including 15 genera currently recognized as valid, 7resurrected genera and 3 newgenera(Durand, Chen et al. 2012).
