{"id":28362,"date":"2011-11-24T12:22:57","date_gmt":"2011-11-24T04:22:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oc.ntu.edu.tw\/oceng\/?p=724"},"modified":"2023-08-02T05:03:53","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T21:03:53","slug":"%e5%a4%a9%e7%84%b6%e6%b0%a3%e6%b0%b4%e5%90%88%e7%89%a9%e5%bd%a2%e6%88%90%e8%88%87%e6%a5%b5%e7%ab%af%e7%92%b0%e5%a2%83%e7%94%9f%e5%9c%b0%e5%8c%96%e4%bd%9c%e7%94%a8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oc.ntu.edu.tw\/en\/research-highlights\/28362\/","title":{"rendered":"Gas Hydrate and Biogeochemical Processes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--:tw-->Gas hydrate formation and associated biogeochemical processes is actively altering deep sea environments offshore SW Taiwan.\u00a0 Abundant methane from organic carbon fermentation and thermogenic source fed assorted forms of microbial community at various depths in sediments as well as near the sea floor.\u00a0 Methane migration could induce biogeochemical processes (Figure 1) including sulfate reduction, anaerobic methane oxidation (AOM), iron and manganese recycling, authigenic carbonate and iron sulfide minerals formation, and gas hydrate formation\/dissociation.\u00a0 Offshore SW Taiwan, situated in a complex tectonic settings with two types of tectonic modes, active and passive margin, adjacent to each in a short distance near Taiwan, is ideal environment in studying gas venting and types of biogeochemical processes under different tectonic settings.\u00a0 Shown in Figure 2 are symbiosis mussel (<em>Bathymodiolus platifrons<\/em>) overlying by another symbiosis galatheid crab (<em>Shinkaia crosnieri<\/em>) intertwined with limpet gastropoda (<em>Bathyacmea tertia<\/em>) and shrimp (<em>Alvinocaris longirostris<\/em>) on top one of our research environment, the Formosa Ridge, using\u00a0<em>ROV Hyperdolphin<\/em>\u00a0on board\u00a0<em>r\/v Natsushima\u00a0<\/em>on a joint cruise with the<em>\u00a0JAMSTEC<\/em>. Figure 3 shows a layer of bacteria mat (<em>Beggiatoa<\/em>) feeding by hydrogen sulfide produced from sulfate reduction with methane diffusion upward reaching the sea floor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oc.ntu.edu.tw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/32.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-728\" title=\"3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oc.ntu.edu.tw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/32.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"368\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a>Figure 1. Chemical weathering of small rivers drainage basins:<\/p>\n<p>Physical denudation as a result of rapid island uplift and frequent earthquake is actively altering Taiwan\u2019s landscape as well as delivering a very high amount of particles into seas surrounding Taiwan.\u00a0 In conjunction, frequent typhoons and monsoon floods are also affecting river water and particle compositions.\u00a0 One of our research topic focuses on spatial and temporal variations of Taiwan\u2019s small rivers.\u00a0 We have been study chemical compositions of river dissolve and particles in trying to understand
