Abstract\uff1a<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
\n Increasing international trade has posed significant threats to wildlife, including marine fishes. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was established in 1975 to address such threats, either by ending or regulating exports. For the more than 4,800 animal species listed on CITES Appendix II, their trade among 182 member states must be limited to levels that are not detrimental to the survival of the wild populations. In recent decades, marine fishes are finally recognized as wildlife that need to be protected. However, can we manage the trade in marine fishes as to other wild animals? We used the official CITES trade database, which includes both export and import data, to evaluate the international trade of Appendix II animals from 1991-2014.
\n We aimed to (1) characterize and compare the trade networks among taxa, with a focus on marine species, and (2) identify the major export\/import countries at a multi-taxa and global scale by considering the number of species in trade and trade connections among countries. We found that more countries were involved with the trade in marine fishes and invertebrates (except corals) and had more connections than trade in other taxa, after considering the number of species in trade. We also discovered a South to North trade for all animal species on Appendix II; in which the USA was the centre of the reported trade, and some Asian countries became notable importers. Our study can help prioritize conservation efforts at global scale and guide future trade
