To play an active role in environmental conservation and to make a positive contribution in this field both in Japan and Asia, Shiga Prefectural Government established the Biwako Prize for Ecology. The prize has been awarded annually since 1991 to researchers who have made academically and socially significant achievements in ecological studies in fields related to aquatic environments and who are expected to further develop and advance their research. The Ecological Society of Japan has organized Biwako Prize for Ecology since the 15th Prize in 2007. The prize is named after 琵琶湖 (bi-wa-ko in Japanese). This largest lake in Japan has been recognized as a flagship model of environmental conservation, managements, and educations; the lake environments had been greatly degraded due to economic growth, eutrophication, and land use changes, but citizens as well as the local government have worked intensively from late 1970’s to recover and improve the lake environments. Local people recognize Biwako as the Mother lake.

The Biwako Prixe winner is recognized by research achievements that will contribute greatly to the advancement of ecology (such as unique and original researches, development of new techniques and technologies, and important discoveries), or those that have great potential to solve important emerging issues, in particular, environmental problems.

The 18th Biwako Prize for Ecology is awarded to Prof. Chih-hao Hsieh (Institute of Oceanography, National Taiwan University). The award ceremony and award seminar will be held on 7/18 at Lake Biwa Museum, Kusatsu City, Japan. In the ceremony, Prof. Hsieh will be officially commended by the Shiga prefectural governor (滋賀縣知事), Mr. Taizo Mikazuki (三日月大造).
